Advent can pass quickly. One moment the candles are being lit, the next the carols have begun and Christmas week is already here. A short course gives the season room to breathe.

This year, Holy Cross will be offering the 2026 Advent Course using the recommended Church of England course, Advent from A to Z by Philip North. The first session will take place at 7.30 pm on Wednesday, 25 November, the week before Advent Sunday.

The course has four sessions, so starting before Advent begins means the group can meet through the season without needing to finish in Christmas week.

Advent is a season of waiting, prayer and preparation.

The Advent Course will use the Church of England resource for 2026

The chosen course for this year is Advent from A to Z by Philip North, Bishop of Blackburn, Imogen Ball and Andrew Zihni. It is the recommended Church of England Advent course for 2026.

The book is widely available from retailers such as Amazon, Eden and Church House Bookshop. At the time of the notice, prices were listed at around £4.77 to £4.99, depending on the seller.

The course is designed for four sessions. That makes it easy to follow across Advent, with enough time to reflect each week without turning the season into a long academic commitment. It should suit people who enjoy discussion, people who prefer to listen, and anyone who wants a simple way to prepare for Christmas with others.

Why the course starts before Advent Sunday

There are four sessions, starting on Wednesday, 25 November allows the course to unfold naturally before Christmas week.

That matters. Many people find the final days before Christmas busy, even when they want to keep them prayerful. There may be family plans, school events, services, travel, shopping, preparations or simply the tiredness that comes with the end of the year. By beginning in the week before Advent Sunday, the course can finish in good time and avoid adding another commitment to Christmas week itself.

The course may also run elsewhere in the plurality

The course will be offered at Holy Cross and may also be offered at other churches in the plurality. That is good news for anyone whose weekly pattern makes Wednesday evenings difficult.
