A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah, chapter 2, verses 1 to 5 in
which the prophet foresees a time when nations will learn to live in peace
with one another
This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: In the
last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as the highest of
the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.
Many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of
the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we
may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He will
judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will
beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation
will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.
Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.
This is the word of the Lord
A reading from the gospel according to John, chapter 15, verses 9 to 17 in
which Jesus talks to his followers about love and commands them that they
are to love one another.
Jesus said to the disciples, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.
Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you
this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My
command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one
than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do
what I command. I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know
his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I
learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I
chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit - fruit that will
last - and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is
my command: Love each other”.
This is the gospel of the Lord
